From Bedlington to the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, just a part of the Sir Daniel Gooch story! 

Here at ABTRA, we are not only looking at the former railway system of the the area to preserve, but also at the other elements of railway history. One major area which we feel has been left behind is the story of Sir Daniel Gooch; who in the article below is involved in the laying of the Transatlantic Cable, but who became a notable engineer on the Great Western Railway under Isambard Kingdom Brunel. 

Indeed in the article, it is use of Brunels’ great ship the Great Eastern, which lead to the successful transatlantic connection being made, one which as far as I understand has been unbroken since 1866.
